There are two kinds of emergency kits: (1) pre-made kits, and (2) what I like to call DIY kits. Both types of kits can be effective, but first, make sure you know which kind of emergency kit will suit you and your family’s needs.
Pre-made Emergency Preparedness Kits
Perhaps you’re too busy to put together your own emergency preparedness kit, or aren’t sure how to build your own kit, but you do know that you need an emergency kit for you and your family. Well, fret no more over your family’s future – the answer to your problem is a pre-made emergency preparedness kit. If you need to save the time of buying each emergency kit component separately, these pre-made kits, available on Amazon, are a life-saver!
DIY Emergency Survival Kits
The following kits are the do-it-yourself type. So, grab a shopping cart, and start assembling the Emergency Survival Kit which fits you and your family’s needs!
- Dormroom Disasters: Are you college student, or the parent of a college student concerned about building an emergency kit in preparation of a disaster? If yes, then I have the answer! A dormroom stockpile is an emergency kit which prepares college kids for dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters like earthquakes or floods by keeping a “stockpile” of emergency supplies. Items such as emergency food, sanitation, water, disposable items, and medical supplies are a good idea to include in a dormroom stockpile.

- Multi-tasking Emergency Survival Kit: Another great kit to have is a multi-tasking emergency survival kit (MESK). What is an “MESK”? Well, a multi-tasking kit consists of extremely useful emergency supplies which can provide help for multiple tasks, therefore saving space in your overall emergency preparation. For example, one of the components of the MESK is duct tape. As we all know, duct tape can be a miracle-worker for all sorts of odd jobs. From constructing a make-shift shelter to attaching supplies together, duct tape has it covered.
- Emergency Survival Kit for Families with Babies: If you have a baby, or toddler , and are concerned with weathering an emergency with littles… To calm your fears about diaper-less disasters, build a ‘Baby Bug-Out bag’ or more formally, an Emergency Survival Kit for families with babies. These types of kits usually include necessities such as diapers, formula, wipes, sterile bottles kept in a ziploc, purified water (if you bottle-feed your baby – to mix with formula) and more.
- Emergency Survival Kit for Older Children: A few tips: when packing this kit for your child, remember to make it as light-weight as possible, make sure to get a durable bag so it won’t break while you’re trekking to safety (heaven forbid!) and make an effort to let them help pack it so the child will feel responsible for it. Once you’re all done packing your kid’s survival kit, you can feel safe and certain that your kid is prepared!
- Basic Emergency Survival Kit: Next up is the Basic Emergency Survival kit. This kit includes all of the “basic necessities” of life. For example, basic survival kits usually include extra clothes, water, non-perishable food, important family documents, and other supplies which last 3 days ‘just in case.’ A Basic Survival kit is especially useful because it’s a good place to start before going on to personalize your family’s bug-out bag to your particular needs.
