We’re officially in National Emergency Preparedness Month – and I hope you’re ready to get even more prepared! The goal of National Emergency Preparedness Month is to help each citizen in theUnited States prepare for emergencies and other possible disasters that could strike at any time, and planning is a critical part of preparedness. Once you have established a plan, you won’t have to panic if disaster does strike – and it could strike at any time. No matter where you live in the world, you could run into any number of emergencies or natural disasters, including tornados, hurricanes, blizzards, power outages, floods, and fires. It is important to plan for these events, however unlikely, to keep your family safe if the worst does happen. Creating a plan for each emergency helps prepare your family for every situation and can help keep you and each family member safe under any conditions.

Luckily, creating a plan is not that difficult, and you can rest easier knowing that you have a plan for any possible emergency or disaster that could strike your area.

Plan for Your Family’s Unique Needs

Your family has unique needs that make it different from everyone else. Perhaps you have a family member with medical challenges that require extra care in emergencies. Maybe your family is scattered throughout town during the day, and each family member needs his or her own plan of action for any emergency. The region where you live will also change the needs of your family – if you live in sunnyFlorida, for example, it is unlikely that you need to prepare for frequent snowstorms, but hurricanes and other tropical storms may frequently strike your area. Customize a unique emergency plan for your family based on what emergencies can strike, where each family member will be, and what you have to do to keep your family safe under all conditions.

Plan for Record Safety

The maintenance of your family records is vitally important in any emergency. Medical records, birth records, social security cards, and other important legal documents should be easy to access and ready to face any emergency. Strategies for preserving your vital records include placing the documents in waterproof, fireproof boxes, and keeping the box within easy reach in case of evacuation. Never forget your records when creating an emergency plan for your family.

Plan to Learn Safety Skills

Safety skills can help keep your family safe in any situation. Safety skills like first aid care, learning to drive in difficult driving conditions like heavy rain or snow, and starting a fire under any conditions can help you survive in any situation. Always try to keep up-to-date on first aid certification and other medical administration skills that can help keep your family healthy, even when you have no access to traditional medical facilities.

Prepare Emergency Supplies

Each household should have an emergency supply kit for different potential emergencies. Most emergency kits should contain things like first aid supplies, necessary medicines, food and water for 3-4 days, flashlights and batteries, and other similar equipment that will help your family through any temporary emergency. Prepare several event-specific kits to help your family weather any potential disaster.

Family Preparedness is Key to Peace of Mind

Preparation is the first step to preventing harmful events and panic. If each member of your family knows what to do in emergencies, then your family can calmly make the necessary preparations to stay safe under any conditions. Proper preparation can keep your family safe and give you peace of mind knowing you can weather any storm.
