Guess what, preppers? This month is the best month of all to prepare, prepare, prepare! (All months are good to “prepare” but this month is extra special preparedness-wise!)
September is National Preparedness Month! This means it is your job to read about preparing, prepare yourself and your family, and overall, get informed about emergencies such as blackouts, fires, and other city hazards.
Here are few of the topics we’ll be covering in the weeks ahead, and what to do about them. (Remember – the best way to prepare is to get informed about what you’re preparing yourself for!)
Be Aware of Warning Signal Systems in Your Area
When preparing against an emergency or natural disaster, it is important to be aware of the warning signal sytem which go off during an emergency in your area or neighborhood. Some areas use sirens, others call people, or even go door-to-door during an emergency. Whichever is the case, it’s important to get informed, and know what to expect when the unexpected happens!
Blackouts and Power Outages:
Blackouts happen to everyone, whether once in a while or all the time. They are simply a fact of life, so it’s important to know where and when blackouts are happening, and whether they are scheduled or accidental. You can get informed about blackouts in your area, when you need to prepare for blackouts, when the utility company will put the power back on, and more at your local utility company’s website. This is why you need to prepare in advance… Since when the power goes off, you’ll be unable to get online unless you have a charged-up smartphone!

Home Fires:
House fires are a hazard whether you’re living on or off the grid, but they are preventable. Get informed about fire prevention and what to do in case of a small fire before it happens! There are many, many resources out there, in addition to Mom Prepares – such as your local fire department – which can help you prepare against a fire in your home, and help you know what to do when a fire occurs.
Know What Hazards Are in Your Area!
Another part of National Preparedness month (or just regular ol’ “prepping”) is being aware of which disasters your area might be normally prone to. For example, do you live in an area that often gets hit by hurricanes or floods? Do wildfires happen often where you live? These are good questions to ask in order to get informed about possible emergency/disaster situations in your area – because once you know what is likely to happen, you’re better able to prepare.
