My mother in-law has always cleaned with orange oil, and I’ve always been jealous of the way her house smells. After all, who wouldn’t want to walk in the door and forget for a moment that it was home as the scent took you far away, to an orange orchard?
Besides for cleaning with it, my mother in-law says Orange Oil is good for killing bugs like ants…
Turns out, she’s right. (not that I ever questioned her wisdom!)
We’ve had thousands of little black ants invading our house over the past few weeks, and it finally got to where I couldn’t stand it any more. I didn’t want to put out harsh chemicals with a two year old running around the house, but I was almost ready to give up and use something toxic.
Unable to find a big bottle of pure orange oil at our local stores, I mentioned on Facebook that I was looking for some. A friend told me I could get Orange Oil at Walmart, in the fragrance aisle! The brand to look for is Pure Citrus. It comes in a can that looks like any other air freshener. However, it’s non-aerosol and 100% natural. In fact, there’s only one ingredient… Orange Oil.
Our Walmart was out of the original scent (plain orange) so I picked up Vanilla, which is 100% Orange and Vanilla oils.
I sprayed the trail of ants with the oil and they died instantly. I got a little carried away, spraying every trail, entrance, and shelf before stopping to think twice. Orange OIL!! Oil is slippery. Sure enough I’d turned my tile floors into an accident waiting to happen. I hurriedly cleaned up the main traffic areas. I left the oil around the very edges, door frames, and around/under the waste basket.
Since I sprayed around the front door, inside and out, they have stopped coming inside.
Hurray for an ant free house! And, for not having to use harsh chemicals.
And, did I mention, my house smells like an orange cremecicle!!!
