There are a lot of types of camping stoves out there. Choosing, and then using, a camp stove can seem pretty overwhelming and well, scary, if you’ve never used one. But – camp stoves aren’t very complicated, and are really quite easy to use, as well as being typically fairly lightweight – these little powerhouses make an excellent addition to your prepper plans.
Our family camps a lot, so we purchased a basic camp stove several years ago. It has served us well over the years, and at this point, I’m not “scared” of it anymore. Today, I thought I’d use our camp stove to show you how easy it is to use a camp stove so you can add one to your prepper plans with confidence.
This is our camp stove.
Pretty plain Jane with 2 burners and 2 knobs that allow you to adjust the heat. It’s very compact and light weight – a feature I really like. (Note: our camp stove is a little gross as we were using it on a camping trip when I took these pictures. Forgive me!) All of the components to use the camp stove can be kept right there inside the stove. The top (or hood) of the stove folds down and latches to the base, securing your stove and protecting the burners.
Getting to Know Your Camp Stove: Basic Parts
Burners & Grate
The components of a camping stove are pretty simple. There are 2 burners that are non-removable.

The grate that sits over the burners is removable. Small holes in the back hold it in place and keep it from sliding around.
The grate on our stove is removable, which I think is a nice feature because it makes cleaning the stove very easy (not evidenced by these pictures).
You could also use the grate as a makeshift fire grate over a fire if you needed to.
